FRN Info

In order to take the Amateur Radio test, the FCC requires you have an FRN. This number is used instead of your SSN. It just takes a couple of minutes to get and free. Just go to the link below, create an account and get your FRN. Don't forget the account credentials you used when you created your account.

After you have completed your FRN, please complete the form below and turn into Gary Bennett a week before the test.

The FRN is free. If taking the test at the Stake Center, it is free. If taken at another location they may charge $15. If you don't want your home address to show up in the FCC database, you can use your business address.

  • Instructions to get an FRN: Here

Lessons Learned

Communication lessons learned from the East Desert Fire and Peakview Fire: Here

Aux Comm Training

Thanks for expressing your interest in Emergency Communications. First and foremost, you would need to take four online FEMA courses. Here are the links:

They are free and take a few hours each to complete. You will need to apply for a FEMA SID first. There is a link for that on those sites or you can click here to go directly to the "Student Identification System".

After you complete those courses, there is a 2 day, in-person class called AUXCOMM that is required for anyone who wishes to be involved in emergency communications at the county or state level.

To sign up for that, go to MCECG here and sign up. Currently, there isn't a class scheduled, but there is a place holder there until they can work out just how to do the class with COVID restrictions in place. You will need to create a log in, and then select the tab "select events" to get to the sign up.

Coaxial Cable

Coaxial (coax) cable is what is used to connect a ham radio to an antenna. There are many types and sizes of coax cable. The link below is a good place to start to learn which coax will work for your needs in operating your ham radio.

[PAUSE - Unkey 'PPT']

The purpose of this net is to provide amateur radio operators in the Scottsdale Arizona North Area with training for reliable communications in the event of an emergency, to ensure the proper maintenance and operations and readiness of the communication equipment, to pass traffic and provide those with a common interest the opportunity to meet.

This is an open and directed net and anyone is invited to join in. The only requirement to participate is a positive attitude and the wiliness to learn.

We will ask for visitors after the regular roll call. Please transmit as directed by the net control station. Stations are requested to end each transmission with their call sign. Stations are requested to remain on frequency until net traffic and training have been completed and the net is closed. If you need to leave the net early, please notify net control.
